Joseph Stalin

Certainly the Red Army must annihilate the German fascist occupants, since they wish to enslave our motherland, and when, being surrounded by our troops, they refuse to lay down their arms and surrender, the Red Army annihilates them not because of their German origin but because they wish to enslave our motherland [...] The Red Army and Navy and the whole Soviet people must fight for every inch of Soviet soil, fight to the last drop of blood for our towns and villages ... onward, to victory!

Joseph Stalin

Joseph Stalin (1878-1953) was the communist dictator of the Soviet Union from 1922 until his death, and was responsible for liberating Eastern Europe from the Nazis, only to enslave them under dictatorship once again after the war.

Stalin was initially on the side of Hitler, with the two nations signing a non-belligerence pact that would allow Germany to annex Western Poland and the Soviets the East.

However, after Hitler invaded the Soviet Union as a part of Operation Barbarossa, Stalin became an ally, with Britain and the United States offering the Soviets weapons and money to fight the Nazis from the Eastern front.

Hitler's troops were ill-equipped for the winter, making Stalin's deadly tactics all the more effective in ushering in a Nazi retreat. However, the Russian people would pay an ultimate price for Stalin's brutal tactics and under-supplying of weapons, clothes, and food to the Red Army, as World War II caused the deaths of approximately 20 million civilians and soldiers.
